Our Mission Statement
Homework House provides free tutoring and mentoring for
children who are at-risk for academic failure and dropping out of school. we
give children with special needs a loving and caring environment. We help them
improve their literacy skills so they can become productive members of our
community. We work towards rekindling their interests in learning and self
improvement - one page at a time. Services are provided to school-age children
without regard to race, ethnicity, or sex.
The House Rules
To rekindle a child's interest in learning, we start by rebuilding
their self-esteem. To this end we must always be caring and positive, keeping
in mind that even marginal improvement can be valuable life long lessons. We
light the path that leads away from a lifetime of dependency. We unlock the
doors to empowerment and high self-esteem.
Every child is different. Every child has special needs. As their
tutors and mentors, we help children improve themselves by...
-
Changing their attitude towards school;
Children who do not perform well in school tend to dread homework and
classroom participation. By giving them a caring and positive environment, we
give them a reason to rediscover the satisfaction that comes from learning.
-
Taking them away from past failures - give them a fresh slate;
By tutoring in a neutral environment and without the stigma of past
failures hanging over them, children are more likely to take their first
tentative steps towards self-improvement.
-
Serving as a positive role model;
Encouragement by example; show children that it's "cool" to read and
that learning is a life-long experience.
-
Giving them individualized attention;
Maintain a low-cost community resource with high volunteer
participation so that we can maintain our services to no cost to children. Try
to maintain the lowest possible ratio of tutors to children (2:1) to ensure
that every child feels that they are important.
-
Providing them with tools and a proper study environment;
Give them a quiet place to work with plenty of resources.
-
Because everybody deserves a chance to improve themselves;
Provide a low-cost community service that's free to all students of
all social and ethnic backgrounds, and especially to those at or below the
lowest academic and economic levels.
